Top 10 Reasons Why China Won’t Be The World’s Superpower

Written NOVEMBER 2019

China is an amazing country. One of the oldest continuing civilizations on Earth, it has gone from a centuries-old, primarily agrarian society to an industrial economic powerhouse. In the span of 50 years, the reforms that China has put in place have made it the second-largest economy on Earth, and it is soon expected to eclipse the US as the largest. With their sheer numbers, strong economy,[1] and rapidly growing military, the Chinese have drawn the attention and, in some respects, concern of the world. Many people now believe it’s just a matter of time before the country takes over as the next major global superpower.

While that could be the case someday, there are many reasons to believe that it may not be, as there are several serious issues holding China back. Until (and if) these issues can be addressed, it is unlikely that the country will take over anytime soon as the most dominant power on Earth, either militarily or economically. Here are the top ten reasons why China will not take over the world.

10. Pollution

It’s no secret that China has a serious pollution problem. Since its rapid industrialization began in the 1950s, China has reached the point where health scientists estimate it claims 1.6 million lives per year (approximately 4,000 people per day).[2] As other nations had delays in starting production due to environmental restraints and regulations, China built factories without concern for the long-term environmental consequences. As foreign demand for cheaper products made in China soared, so did the creation of factories required to produce them.

In some of the most heavily polluted areas, simply breathing is equivalent to smoking 40 cigarettes per day. With almost half the entire population living within the major (and often most polluted) metropolitan regions, the dire consequences to public health and the need to reverse the damage presents a serious setback for the country.

9. Overpopulation

As of September 2017, the population of China stands at over 1.3 billion people.[3] Although the country is geographically the fourth largest in the world, approximately 20 percent of the entire global population lives inside its borders. This places an enormous strain on its natural resources, particularly when living standards rise, and thus, demand for resources increases.

Although certain measures have been put in place to help curtail the exploding population (such as the nearly 40-year-old one-child policy, which was officially lifted in 2016), it seems likely that China will become more dependent on foreign resources to meet its needs.

8. Demographics

China is facing a demographic nightmare. As fertility rates have decreased and after decades of the one-child policy, the country is getting very old very fast. After the one-child policy was officially lifted in 2016, many couples were now found to only want one child or didn’t plan to have any at all. According to the United Nations, China may have as much as 44 percent of its population retired by 2050.

Unless they can attract Chinese youth back to the country from afar (which, as you will soon see, is itself another major obstacle), a massive strain will be placed on the younger working population to sustain China’s social services, especially considering that the country is a socialist state.

7. Wealth Distribution

Although China has had very impressive continuous growth for many years now, a significant segment of the population still lives in poverty.[5] Since the early 1980s, millions have seen their standard of living dramatically increase, yet while the economy is growing, there are many millions without electricity or adequate drinking water. It will still require a significant amount of time and investment before China’s population as a whole will catch up and be wealthy by the standards of other developed nations.

6. Wage Increase

While the middle class has exploded in China, the expectations have increased, as more Chinese will expect better pay, which in turn will eventually make their products more expensive for consumers. While countries such as Japan and Korea have still exported an enormous amount of goods as their salaries have increased, the quality of these goods has been high, which, in turn, kept demand high. Although the “workshop of the world” exports many goods, they are largely inexpensive because of their poor quality.

Eventually, when the standard of living goes up, the population will expect higher wages, which will inevitably drive up the cost of production, making the products they export too expensive. This will likely result in companies eventually pulling out of the country in search of cheaper nations, such as Vietnam and Bangladesh, to produce their goods.

5. Regional Tensions

There are several regions (such as Tibet and Hong Kong) within China that are demanding more autonomy, which requires the country to devote a significant amount of resources to ensuring political stability within its borders.[7] Until they can attain a certain level of regional stability as well as control an increasing desire from the general population for more freedom, their foreign ambitions will be hampered.

Unlike twhe former Soviet Union, if you wish to emigrate from China, you are free to do so. The only issue appears to be related to Top 10 Reasons China Won’t Be The World’s Next Superpower. This poses a rather serious problem for China, as a recent report indicated that as many as 50 percent of the wealthiest Chinese citizens are considering moving out of the country to places such as the US, Australia, and Canada.

So even if China succeeds in raising its living standards, they face the challenge of then convincing a considerable number of their citizens to stay. Problems previously mentioned such as pollution, overcrowding, and restrictions to personal freedom make moving a tempting option to a very important segment of the population. When they leave, they take their wealth with them, leaving what is referred to a wealth drain, a loss in tax revenue and investment within their borders.

3. State-Owned Enterprises

Although private industry has grown considerably, a very sizeable portion of the Chinese economy is still owned by the state. Approximately 30 percent of their total assets (in both the industrial and service sectors) are state-controlled. This may lead to corruption and inefficiency, as subsidies can and are used to prop up businesses which may otherwise be unable to compete.

With competition comes innovation, which is essential to maintain relevance in an increasingly high-tech, knowledge-based economy. A whopping 50 percent of total industry in China is state-controlled.[9]

2. Reform

China currently finds itself in the rather awkward position of having a somewhat free-market economy while at the same time being a socialist state.[10] As a result, they have a very big domestic challenge ahead of them as they try to keep their economy free and competitive globally in order to generate revenue to improve the country overall and maintain a socialist state domestically.

This can result in a very confusing vision of the future for China’s citizens. As the middle class grows and their wealth increases, class structure should become more evident, which is what socialism is supposed to be against. A healthy free-market economy is widely believed to only be able to sustain itself in the long run if it is free of too much government intervention and capable of competing globally, which is a challenge for a one-party state.

1. Military Issues

Although China has invested heavily in its military, and it is growing, they are still behind the most powerful militaries in the world in terms of equipment and training. It takes a great deal of money to equip and train a military of China’s size. Widespread corruption coupled with a lack of competition, overruns in costs, delays, issues enforcing quality control, and monopolies in the defense industry place the country at a serious disadvantage when it comes to acquiring new technology. Its organizational structure is flawed as well, since the primary objective of the People’s Liberation Army is the protection and preservation of the more than 88 million members of the Communist Party rather than the general public itself.

Equally important is the lack of combat experience, as China hasn’t engaged in combat with a foreign enemy since Vietnamn 1979. The lack of experience in comparison to countries such as the US, UK, and Russia places China at a disadvantages.

Top 10 Poisonous Foods We Love To Eat (Killing You)

Top 10 poisonous foods we love to eat and his already favourite to some, these foods have shocking contents can that harm your health and excess might kill you.

Here are the 19 poisonous foods we love eating:

10. Mushrooms

Mushrooms (Credit: Santiago Urquijo)

We have all heard of toadstools and know that they are poisonous, but what many people don’t know is that a toadstool is actually a mushroom, not a separate type of plant. Toadstool is slang for “poisonous mushroom”. While there are some useful signs that a mushroom is poisonous, they are not consistent and all mushrooms of unknown origin should be considered dangerous to eat.

Some of the things you can look for to try to determine whether a mushroom is poisonous are: it should have a flat cap with no bumps, it should have pink or black gills (poisonous mushrooms often have white gills), and the gills should stay attached to the cap (not the stalk) if you pull it off. But remember, while this is generally true of many types of mushroom, it is not always true.
Not all mushrooms are dangerous; some are actually delicious.

9. Almonds

Almonds ( Credit: Akepong Srichaichana / EyeEm)

Almonds are one of the most useful and wonderful of seeds (it is not a nut as many people would have you believe). It has a unique taste and its excellent suitability for use in cooking have made it one of the most popular ingredients in kitchens for centuries. The most flavorsome almonds are bitter almonds (as opposed to “sweet” almonds). They have the strongest scent and are the most popular in many countries. But there is one problem: they are full of cyanide. Before consumption, bitter almonds must be processed to remove the poison. Despite this requirement, some countries make the sale of bitter almonds illegal (New Zealand regretfully is one of them). As an alternative, you can use the pip from an apricot stone which has a similar flavor and poison content. Heating destroys the poison. In the USA to sell raw almonds, all almonds sold are now heat-treated to remove traces of poison and bacteria.

8. Cherries

Cherries, (Photo by Scott Barbour/Getty Images)

Cherries are a very popular fruit used in cooking, liqueur production, or eaten raw. They are from the same family as plums, apricots, and peaches. All of the previously mentioned fruits contain highly poisonous compounds in their leaves and seeds. Almonds are also a member of this family but they are the only fruit which is harvested especially for its seeds. When the seeds of cherries are crushed, chewed, or even slightly injured, they produce prussic acid (hydrogen cyanide). Next time you are eating cherries, remember not to suck on or chew the pip.

7. Pufferfish

Pufferfish (Credit: Zen Rial)

Eating the liver of a fugu (pufferfish) is so poisonous. The fugu is so poisonous and toxic that in Japan, fugu chefs are trained specially for the job and are tested before being a given certificates of practice. The training takes two or three years. In order to pass, the chef must answer a written test then give a demonstration of his cutting abilities. The final part of the test involves the chef eating the pieces of fugu that he has cut. Only 30% of apprentices pass the test which is not to say that the rest die by eating their fugu they can fail in earlier parts of the test. Only the flesh of the fugu is consumed as it is less likely to have high amounts of poison (which causes a slight tingling sensation in the mouth). Fugu is the only food officially illegal for the Emperor of Japan to eat for his safety.

6. Apples

Apples (Credit: Kampon Warit / EyeEm)

Apple seeds also contain cyanide but obviously in much smaller doses. Apple seeds are very often eaten accidentally but you would need to chew and consume a fairly high number to get sick. There are not enough seeds in one apple to kill, but it is absolutely possible to eat enough to die. I recommend avoiding apple eating competitions! Incidentally, if you want to eat an apple and find a worm in it (and hopefully not half a worm), you can drop it in a bowl of salt water which will kill the worm.

5. Elderberry

Elderberry (Credit: Simon Wheeler Ltd)

Elderberry trees are very attractive and quite large. They are covered with thousands of tiny flowers which have a delicate scent. The flowers are used mainly for making elderflower liqueur and soda. Sometimes the flowers are eaten after being battered and deep fried. But beneath the pretty surface lurks danger! The roots and some other parts of the elderberry tree are highly poisonous and will cause severe stomach problems. So next time you decide to pick some elderberry flowers for eating, be sure to eat just the flowers.

4. Rhubarb

Rhubarb (Credit: Lisa Stokes)

Rhubarb is a very underrated plant it produces some of the nicest tasting puddings and is incredibly easy to grow at home. Rhubarb is something of a wonder plant in addition to an unknown poison in its leaves, they also contain a corrosive acid. If you mix the leaves with water and soda, it becomes even more potent. The stems are edible (and incredibly tasty) and the roots have been used for over 5,000 years as a laxitive and poop-softener.

3. Castor Oil

Castor oil, the bane of many of our childhoods, is regularly added to candies, chocolate, and other foods. Furthermore, many people still consume a small amount daily or force it on their unwilling children. Fortunately the castor oil we buy is carefully prepared, because the castor bean is so deadly, that it takes just one bean to kill a human, and four to kill a horse. The poison is ricin, which is so toxic that workers who collect the seeds have strict safety guidelines to prevent accidental death. Despite this, many people working in the fields gathering the seeds suffer terrible side-effects.

2. Tomatoes

Tomatoes, Top 10 Poisonous You Should Stop Eating
Tomatoes (Photo credit : FRED TANNEAU/AFP via Getty Images)

In US, tomatoes are referred to as vegetables after US Supreme Court decision in 1893. In the rest of the world they are considered to be fruit (or more accurately, a berry). You may also be interested to know that technically, a tomato is an ovary. The leaves and stems of the tomato plant contain a chemical called “Glycoalkaloid” which causes extreme nervousness and stomach upsets. Despite this, they can be used in cooking to enhance flavor, but they must be removed before eating. Cooking in this way does not allow enough poison to seep out but can make a huge difference in taste. Finally, to enhance the flavor of tomatoes, sprinkle a little sugar on them. Now we just need to work out whether they are “toe-mah-toes” or “toe-may-toes”.

1. Potatoes

Potatoes (Credit: mikroman6)
Potatoes (like tomatoes) contain poison in the stems and leaves and even in the potato itself if left to turn green (the green is due to a high concentration of the glycoalkaloid poison). Potato poisoning is rare, but it does happen from time to time. Death normally comes after a period of weakness and confusion, followed by a coma. The majority of cases of death by potato in the last fifty years in the USA have been the result of eating green potatoes or drinking potato leaf tea.

10 Horrifying Secrets Doctors Will Never Tell You

As a modern culture, we tend to put our faith wholeheartedly in doctors. They’re the experts, and more often than not we take their advice without question. But what we don’t take into account is that many of these doctors either don’t have a clue or actively withhold information that could be putting your life in jeopardy.

And if you think that sounds sensationalist, take a look at these facts, facts that doctors know about but won’t let it o as you sign the bill:

10. Cancer Isn’t Always Cancer

Cancer diagnosis . (Photo by Andrew Lichtenstein/Corbis via Getty Images)

The worst possible outcome of a trip to the doctor is a diagnosis of the Big C. We’re so terrified of it that even the word is taboo in some places, and the medical community lives by one maxim: early diagnosis. The earlier you find the cancer, the more easily you can treat it. But such enthusiasm can easily lead to false positives, and treating something that isn’t there can be dangerous. We’re not just making that up. Mammograms are famous for misdiagnosing breast cancer, since every little anomaly in the breast can look like a tumor. The most common misdiagnosis is with DCIS, or Ductal Carcinoma In Situ. Despite the “carcinoma” in there, DCIS isn’t really cancerous ; only rarely does it turn into cancer, and practically everyone with DCIS survives, no matter what kind of treatment they get.But when doctors quote cancer statistics, they usually lump in DCIS, which now accounts for about 30 percent of breast cancer “cases” in the US. And when faced with that option, most people choose to undergo “needless and sometimes disfiguring and harmful treatments” to get rid of something that, statistically, will do less harm than the treatments themselves.

9. High Blood Pressure Drugs Destroys Your Sexual Health

Take this drugs

Your doctor will never tell you this, most of the people suffering from high blood pressure and uses the drugs prescribed by the doctor are killing their sexual health.

This secret is what doctors won’t tell you, A man shared a story with us how he declined in his sexual performance badly, and we asked if he uses drugs for HBP and he replied, yes, ok we gave an advice to stop using the drugs and immediately he saw changed. He went away to sue the doctor for not informing him the drugs could cause this to him and how it has affected his marriage.

8. Prescription Drugs Can Cause Diabetes

Spoon full of sugar cubes (Credit: Peter Dazeley)

Type 2 diabetes is caused when your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t effectively use all the insulin it makes. The result is a buildup of glucose, or sugar, in the bloodstream, which starts damaging nerves and blood vessels over time. About 2.3 million Americans have type 2 diabetes, and the numbers rise every year.It turns out that some of the most commonly prescribed drugs, like antidepressants, might be causing it. In 2011, there were 46.7 million prescriptions given out to treat depression in the UK alone. When researchers at the University of Southampton looked at the numbers, they found that people who took two of the most common types of antidepressants, SSRIs and tricyclic antidepressants, were twice as likely to develop diabetes. And sure, those findings were released in 2013, but we’ve known about the link since 2008 and yet millions more are prescribed on a monthly basis. And it gets worse—some of the most common drugs used to treat ADHD in children can triple the risk of type 2 diabetes. More often than not, that’s a lifelong condition, and kids don’t even get the choice to refuse.

7. Some Medications Increase Cancer Risk

Lymphoblasts. (Photo by Andrew Lichtenstein/Corbis via Getty Images)

Now that we’ve assuaged some of your worries about cancer, let’s go ahead and kick everything back up again.Blood pressure medications can almost triple your risk of aggressive breast cancer. In the US alone, about 58.6 million people take medication for high blood pressure, so you’d think the cancer link would be more well-known.The study that discovered this relationship looked at 1,763 women with breast cancer. Those who used a particular type of blood pressure medicine—calcium channel blockers—were 2.5 times more likely to develop cancer. The risk is greater in elderly women over the age of 55, and it likely happens because calcium channel blockers prevent cells from dying. If cells can’t complete their normal life cycle, they go rogue and become cancerous. But even that wouldn’t be a problem if the medication weren’t so grossly over-prescribed. In a review of one hospital, 150 out of 161 doctors prescribed calcium channel blockers to their patients. But how many of those doctors told their patients about the risks? Only eight. That’s a potentially deadly lapse in duty.

6. Aspirin Can Cause Internal Bleeding

Aspirin ( Credit: Nine OK)

One of the more common pieces of advice from doctors is that you should take a low dose of aspirin every day. The idea is that it serves as a maintenance treatment to prevent blood clots, which can cause heart attacks and strokes. But what they don’t tell you is the small fact that doing so can trigger massive internal bleeding.Researchers found that, out of 10,000 people, a daily dose of aspirin prevented 46 people from dying over the course of 10 years. But they also found that 49 people out of the same 10,000 experienced major internal bleeding, and another 117 started bleeding in their gastrointestinal tract.

5. Heartburn Drugs Have Deadly Side Effects

Heart burn
Heart burn (Credit: Peter Dazeley)

One of the main problems with medications is that, while they usually do a decent job of treating what they’re supposed to treat, they often cause horrible side effects. And even though it’s the doctor’s job to tell people about those side effects, sometimes that just doesn’t happen. For example, proton pump inhibitors, a type of heartburn drug marketed under the brand names Nexium and Prilosec, have been linked to bone decay, birth defects, and an inability to absorb vitamin B12, which can lead to permanent neurological damage.

Despite that, Nexium was the single most prescribed drug in 2012, and in many cases it doesn’t even work. It’s usually prescribed to treat Barrett’s esophagus, which is when excess stomach acid burns the lining of the esophagus, but the pills don’t do a thing for the condition. Pediatricians have even started prescribing these meds to infants, even though it’s been proven that doing so can actually cause permanent intestinal disorders.

4. “Safe” X-Rays Still Cause Cancer

Full frame shot of X-ray

It’s a well-known fact that gamma radiation and X-rays carry the risk of bringing cancer. Now, we’re constantly exposed to radiation just by being alive, so there’s a general guideline for “safe exposure” to X-rays, which the medical profession sticks to when they look for broken bones or give you a mammogram. Radiation is measured in units called sieverts, and every year you’re exposed to about 2.4 millisieverts, just from general background radiation; by contrast, a mammogram only gives you about 0.7 millisieverts.

Read Also: Top 5 Heart Breaking Pictures Of Children Ever Taken (Don’t Cry)

The difference, though, is that medical X-rays pop that radiation into you in the space of minutes, whereas it takes a whole year to absorb your typical background radiation. And it’s a huge difference, even with low-radiation “safe” X-rays. And it could be even worse than thatsome researchers claim that the majority of cancer cases were either caused or aggravated by medical X-rays.And to top it all off, women who get X-rays when pregnant have been found more likely to give birth to children with cancer. And a CT scan is the go-to diagnostic tool for young children, which, you guessed it, is just another type of X-ray.

3. Doctors Get Paid When You Buy Certain Drugs

A Doctor (Image credit: Getty Images)

Conspiracy theorists aren’t shy about proclaiming the evils of Big Pharma. But conspiracy theory is one thing, and documented proof is a whole different beast. When the Harvard Law School took a closer look, they realized that they didn’t have to dig very deep at all to discover that doctors are paid handsomely to prescribe certain drugs, even when those drugs turn out to be harmful.

One of the most publicized recent cases was Dr. Joseph L. Biederman, who began diagnosing two-year-old toddlers with bipolar disorder and prescribing strong antipsychotics that were never approved by the FDA for children under 10.

The manufacturer of the antipsychotics paid him $1.6 million. Then there’s Dr. Alan F. Schatzberg, who began prescribing an abortion drug to treat depression—he owned $4.8 million of stock in the company that produced the drug. And then you have Dr. Charles B. Nemeroff, who received $500,000 to advertise as safe a drug that can cause seizures and paralysis The fact is, doctors are allowed to prescribe any drug for any illness, no matter what the drug was originally intended to treat. We’re not making a blanket statement saying all doctors take money to prescribe questionable treatments—but how do you know which ones do?

2. Pandemic Scares Are Over-Hyped

Pandemic (Credit:Popperfoto / Contributor)

Who can forget the swine flu pandemic in 2009 and 2010? When the World Health Organization called for a state of global emergency, the world went haywire. Lines for the vaccine stretched for blocks, and doctors everywhere told people to seek immediate treatment.Over the course of about 10 months, pharmaceutical companies raked in £6.5 billion (about $10.5 billion in 2010) from vaccine sales. Doctors tied to the vaccine’s manufacturers were 8.4 times more likely to recommend the vaccine to their patients. And not only recommend—they were more likely to publicly hype the dangers of the flu in the media, which immeasurably contributed to the state of panic. And strangely, doctors who were being paid by pharmaceutical companies were also more likely to volunteer information to the press.

That doesn’t seem like much of a difference, but it’s these quoted experts that we tend to believe in a news article. In the end, about 17,000 people died from swine flu, as opposed to the 46,000 that die every year from the normal flu. Surely the low numbers were due to the mass vaccinations—rather than, say, the fact that the disease was just a common mutation artificially inflated to terror-inducing proportions.

1. Registered Sex Offenders And Violent Criminals

the dark side of medicine.
The dark side of doctors(Credit: shotbydave)

Your doctor doesn’t have to disclose his criminal history, and usually that wouldn’t be considered a problem. Between the strict admission policies of most medical schools and the vague notion that hospitals probably screen their employees, who would even think to ask? Well, maybe you should. In November 2013, the UK’s General Medical Council, or GMC, released a database with the criminal histories of physicians in the United Kingdom.

It turned out that almost 800 practicing doctors held criminal records, including 31 who were arrested for assault and 330 arrested for drunk driving. The rest of them? Crimes range from theft to drug trafficking, and they’re under zero legal obligation to let their patients know about it.And it’s not exactly rare. There’s the rapist surgeon working in Miami, and the New York doctor who was caught trying to meet a young boy for sex, and a Scottish physician who had reams of child pornography stored on his computer.Who’s really taking care of you?

5. Iraqi Girl Crying After Her Family Died At A Checkpoint

Title: Iraqi Girl at Checkpoint, Tal Afar, Iraq, 2005

The blood-spattered, five-year-old girl at the Iraqi checkpoint showed a glimpse of a wider story. Samar Hassan’s parents were driving her brother back from the hospital when US soldiers opened fire. The soldiers had feared that the car was full of suicide bombers and gunned them down.

Only afterward did they see that it was a civilian family. These kinds of arbitrary civilian casualties were common during the Iraq War because soldiers were given liberal rights to take any means necessary to protect themselves.

In 2005, photographer Chris Hondros took one of the few images of this nature that reached popular imagination in the West. He delivered the picture despite orders to keep it. The order was due to the tight control over war photography at the time and because photographers found it too dangerous to travel there. Hondros died in the 2011 civil war in Libya.

The child’s face represented the civilian’s pain during the war. It is one of the most important photographs of the Iraq War. It also sowed skepticism in the public when they saw the people they were supposedly trying to help. The photo reached the Pentagon, and policies about checkpoints were changed due to the image.

4. Vulture Waiting For Girl To Die

Vulture and the Little Girl
Vulture and the Little Girl (Photo credit:

Title: The Vulture and the Little Girl, Ayod, South Sudan, 1993

Pictures can tell the truth with light and timing. In the bright day, the child was too weak to stand. She was only one of many in a South Sudan that was gradually starving to death. A vulture landed nearby to watch and wait for her to die. With the photographer nearby and the child still crawling, the vulture did not draw nearer. The girl supposedly made it to the feeding center nearby. Yet the picture became a “metaphor of Africa’s despair.”People knew that the Sudanese were starving. But when this was published in The New York Times in 1993, it opened many eyes. And it made hundreds ask: Why didn’t the photographer help the child? He chased the vulture away but left her to continue her painful crawl. Not everyone realized that photojournalists were told not to touch famine victims for fear of spreading disease. There was an outpouring of accusation toward Kevin Carter. Was it a photojournalist’s duty to intervene? A year after taking the picture, Carter took his own life.

3. A Fall From A Building Captured On Camera

Title: Fire Escape Collapse, Boston, Massachusetts, 1975

Where should the line be drawn for releasing disturbing images? The photographer thought he was taking pictures of a routine rescue. The godmother and her goddaughter were crowded on the fire escape where a firefighter was moving to help.In the midst of the rescue, the fire escape collapsed. The photographer continued to take photos, freezing the terrible fall in picture. The victims seemed to be swimming through the air, their expressions clear in that instant.Photographer Stanley Forman turned away before they hit the ground because he didn’t want to see their deaths. The godmother, Diana Bryant, died when she hit the ground. But miraculously, she cushioned the fall for her two-year-old goddaughter, Tiare, who survives to this day.Forman won the Pulitzer Prize for his work. Almost overnight, fire escape safety became a nationwide debate. It led to numerous municipalities throughout the US changing their fire escape safety codes.

2. Young refugee lying lifeless

Title: Death of Alan Kurdi, Bodrum, Turkey, 2015

When photographer Nilufer Demir came across the two-year-old Syrian boy washed up on the shore, Alan looked like he was sleeping. Demir took the pictures because that was “the only way to express the scream of his silent body.” Alan was a Syrian refugee of the ongoing civil war that has already killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians.Millions more are refugees, and the story of Alan’s family is a common one. Syrians who escape the fighting have reached refugee camps, only to find them overflowing and hungry. Chances to be transferred to a safer country can be frighteningly slim when the refugees have no connections or good source of income. Alan’s family was denied multiple times. In a last, desperate act, they paid to be smuggled out on an inflatable raft over open waters. The raft, holding twice its recommended capacity, capsized several minutes in, and bodies began to wash up on the Greek coast. It’s easier than ever to share a picture with the world. When Alan Kurdi’s picture was released, millions were viewing it within the day. It’s one of the most telling images in an ongoing war that many prefer to ignore.

1. Japanese Bombing Of Fleeing

Chinese Refugees1-the-shanghai-baby ( Photo credit: )

Title: Bloody Saturday, Shanghai, China, 1937

It is one of the most influential picture ever taken, It depicts when Japan was openly bombing and killing its way across China. But to most Americans, it was a distant conflict and not their problem.

The picture was taken after Japanese bombers attacked Shanghai in the middle of the day on Saturday, August 28, 1937. Bombs were dropped on a railway station where Japanese refugees were crowded. The picture was taken minutes after the bombs had fallen. Chinese photographer H.S. Wong recalled the horror as the dead and the living crowded the terminal. “My shoes were soaked with blood,” he said. a baby alone on the railroad tracks with the mother lying dead nearby. He took pictures before going to help the baby, who was soon taken by his father.

The pictures released in the Chinese press made their way overseas to the US.The Bloody Saturday (aka Shanghai Baby) photo caught the sympathy and shock of the public as it was released on every major news venue. Over 130 million people could now put a face to the tragedy. The Shanghai baby shocked the country, and condemnation of the war crashed down on Japan. It showed the devastation, death, and sorrow the war was bringing. It was one of the landmarks leading toward America’s entry into the war.Kellie McIntyre is a freelance writer working over social media and websites. JavaScript has curly-bracket syntax, dynamic typing, prototype-based object-orientation, and first-class functions.

2. Python

Since 2003, Python has consistently ranked in the top ten most popular programming languages in the TIOBE Programming Community Index where, as of December 2018, it is the third most popular language (behind Java, and C). It was selected Programming Language of the Year in 2007, 2010, and 2018. An empirical study found that scripting languages, such as Python, are more productive than conventional languages, such as C and Java, for programming problems involving string manipulation and search in a dictionary, and determined that memory consumption was often “better than Java and not much worse than C or C++”. Large organizations that use Python include Wikipedia, Google, Yahoo!, CERN, NASA, Facebook, Amazon, Instagram, Spotify and some smaller entities like ILM and ITA. The social news networking site Reddit is written entirely in Python.

3. Java

Java is a general-purpose programming language that is class-based, object-oriented, and designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible. It is intended to let application developers write once, run anywhere (WORA), meaning that compiled Java code can run on all platforms that support Java without the need for recompilation. Java applications are typically compiled to bytecode that can run on any Java virtual machine (JVM) regardless of the underlying computer architecture. The syntax of Java is similar to C and C++, but it has fewer low-level facilities than either of them. As of 2019, Java was one of the most popular programming languages in use according to GitHub, particularly for client-server web applications, with a reported 9 million developers.

4. C

C is widely used for systems programming in implementing operating systems and embedded system applications, because C code, when written for portability, can be used for most purposes, yet when needed, system-specific code can be used to access specific hardware addresses and to perform type punning to match externally imposed interface requirements, with a low run-time demand on system resources.

C has also been widely used to implement end-user applications. However, such applications can also be written in newer, higher-level languages.

5. C++

C++ is a general-purpose programming language created by Bjarne Stroustrup as an extension of the C programming language, or “C with Classes”. The language has expanded significantly over time, and modern C++ has object-oriented, generic, and functional features in addition to facilities for low-level memory manipulation. It is almost always implemented as a compiled language, and many vendors provide C++ compilers, including the Free Software Foundation, LLVM, Microsoft, Intel, Oracle, and IBM, so it is available on many platforms.

6. PHP

PHP is a general-purpose programming language originally designed for web development. It was originally created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1994; the PHP reference implementation is now produced by The PHP Group. PHP originally stood for Personal Home Page, but it now stands for the recursive initialism PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor.

As of January 2013, PHP was used in more than 240 million websites (39% of those sampled) and was installed on 2.1 million web servers. A command line interface, php-cli, and two ActiveX Windows Script Host scripting engines for PHP have been produced. As of 2019, PHP 5 is most used on the web; which was last updated with security updates in January 2019, with PHP 5.6.40.

7. C#

C# is a general-purpose, multi-paradigm programming language encompassing strong typing, lexically scoped, imperative, declarative, functional, generic, object-oriented (class-based), and component-oriented programming disciplines. It was developed around 2000 by Microsoft as part of its .NET initiative, and later approved as an international standard by Ecma (ECMA-334) and ISO (ISO/IEC 23270:2018).

8. Ruby

Ruby is an interpreted, high-level, general-purpose programming language. It was designed and developed in the mid-1990s by Yukihiro “Matz” Matsumoto in Japan.
Ruby is one of the most popular languages among tech startups. Many Silicon Valley unicorns have been built on Ruby, including Airbnb, Twitch, GitHub, and Twitter. Its popularity is bolstered (and perhaps dependent) on Ruby on Rails, a full-stack web application framework that runs Ruby.

9. Shell

This is the 9th programming language on this list, This programming language provides you with an interface to the Unix system, it is a program designed to run be run by a Unix shell.

10. Objective-c

Objective-C, the coding language used to build iOS apps for Apple’s App Store, has risen to become one of the most popular languages. Apple chose Objective-C back in the day because it was already the language of NeXTSTEP, the desktop operating system pioneered by Steve Jobs and NeXT.

Top 10 Wealthiest Country In The World ( Is your country No. 1 )

Here is the top 10 wealthiest country in the global world. As more wealth is created in the world, more of it is concentrated among the richest people in the countries.

The wealthiest 10 countries in the world tend to have complex and diverse economies. Many of these countries export goods and services from a variety of industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and aerospace.

10. Hong Kong

Current International Dollars 66,517

A former British colony, this special administrative region of China is a gateway to the mainland and Asia’s top financial center. Ranked 4 among 190 economies in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business index thanks to its good infrastructure and many tax incentives, Hong Kong is an incredibly popular destination to launch a start-up, with foreigners allowed to own 100% of their businesses without any citizenship, residency or nationality requirements.

As a result, the island as a whole is extremely rich although according to government statistics one in five residents lives below the poverty line. Even so, Hong Kong is the city with the largest number of ultra high-net-worth individuals in the world (over 10,000 people with a net worth of at least $30 million).

9. Kuwait

Current International Dollars: 67,969

A lot of oil,Kuwait makes up about 8% of the world’s total reserves. The oil industry accounts today for nearly one-half of the country’s GDP and over 90% of its exports. With a population of approximately 4 million almost entirely concentrated in urban areas, this small state on the northern edge of the Persian Gulf is one of the Middle East’s most advanced and democratic.

The country has since then taken steps to diversify its economy by allowing 100% foreign ownership in a number of sectors and offering various tax breaks to investors. Nevertheless, such changes take time to bear fruit. In the meantime, Kuwait’s parliament passed yet another budget projecting a revenue shortfall for the current fiscal year: the fifth in a row.

8. United Arab Emirates

Current International Dollars: 70,474

Agriculture, fishing and trading pearls, these used to be the economic mainstays of this Persian Gulf nation. Then oil was discovered in the 1950s and everything changed. Today, its highly cosmopolitan population enjoy considerable wealth, traditional Islamic architecture mixes with glitzy shopping centers, and workers come from all over the world lured by tax-free salaries and year-round sunshine (to the extent that only about 20% of the people living in the country are actually locally-born). The United Arab Emirates’ economy is also becoming increasingly diversified.

7. Norway

Current International Dollars: 76,738

Norway’s economic engine is fueled by oil. As western Europe’s top petroleum producer, the country has benefitted from rising prices after years of decline. With massive revenues pumping stimulus into the economy, the central bank governor recently decided to do the unthinkable: hike interest rates to their highest level since 2015. While the rest of Europe flirts with sub-zero rates in order to encourage investment and growth, Scandinavia’s richest nation seems to have the opposite problem: an uptick in inflation, the most glaring signal that the economy is getting stronger.

On a side note, it is also important to point out that Norwegian policymakers know that with great GDP growth comes great responsibility: contrary to many other rich nations, high per capita GDP figures are truly a reflection of people’s financial wellbeing. Norway has one of the lowest income inequality gaps in the world.

6. Ireland

Current International Dollars: 82,439

European Union economies are going through a rough period. Amid uncertainties tied to Brexit and trade tensions, rising oil prices and Italy’s economic woes, Eurozone officials were forced to slash their growth forecast for the 19 member countries to 1.1%. The Irish economy, however, just keeps growing: in 2019, it will expand by over 4%, consolidating its role as the fastest-growing economy of the bloc following the 2008 financial crisis. A nation of less than 5 million inhabitants, Ireland was one of the hardest hit by the global downturn.

5. Brunei Darussalam

Current International Dollars: 83,777

Brunei, lives. Thier fortune derived from the immense reserves of oil and natural gas of the country—is estimated at over $20 billion, 40 times that of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth. Despite Bolkiah’s opulence, and a per-person GDP of over $86,000, malnutrition in Brunei is commonplace. Something like 440,000 people 40% of the population earn less than $1,000 a year.

4. Singapore

Current International Dollars: 103,717

Singapore’s economy expanded by 3.2% in 2018, a sharp slowdown compared to 2017, when it grew 3.9%. Global trade tensions can have such effects. Yet one would be hard-pressed to find any clue of this deceleration by looking at the country’s GDP per capita figures. According to the IMF, GDP per capita grew in 2017 grew to over $86,000 from the previous year, reached $89,000 in 2018, and is projected to follow this upward trend in 2019 and until at least 2024, when it is expected to jump to $99,000.

How did Singapore become so rich? When Singapore became independent in 1965, one-half of its population was illiterate. With virtually no natural resources, Singapore pulled itself up by its boostraps through hard work and smart policy, becoming one of the most business-friendly places in the world. Today, Singapore is a thriving trade, manufacturing and financial hub and 97% of the adult population is adult literate.

3. Luxembourg

Current International Dollars: 108,813

Europe, this nation of about 600,000 has plenty to offer, both to its tourists and its citizens. Luxembourg uses a large share of its wealth to deliver better housing, healthcare and education to its people, who by far enjoy the highest standard of living in the Eurozone.

Extraordinarily, it is worth mentioning that both the global financial crisis and the pressure from the EU and OECD to reduce banking secrecy have had little impact on the economy.

2. Macao

Current International Dollars: 122,201

In Asia’s gambling capital many are betting that Macao will climb to the first spot of the richest nation’s ranking very soon. Formerly a colony of the Portuguese Empire, since the gaming industry was liberalized in 2001 this special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China has seen its wealth growing at astounding pace. With a population just over 600,000, and more than 40 casinos spread over a territory of about 30 square kilometers, this narrow peninsula just south of Hong Kong is almost literally a money-making machine.

1. Qatar

Current International Dollars: 134,623

Still, the country’s total GDP per person in 2019 is still projected to remain above $134,000, slightly up from last year. Qatar’s oil, gas and petrochemical reserves are so large, and its population so small just a little over 2.6 million that it has topped the list of world’s richest nations for 20 years. This feat is even more remarkable given that Saudi Arabia and its allies imposed a blockade on Qatar in 2017.

Find Out The Strongest Currency In The World (Not The US dollars)

Highest currency in the world 2019 (Top 10)

What are the currencies? We use these valuable papers every day; we choose among Dollar, Euro, Franc, Dinar and many others. Some of them are cheaper, while some are extremely expensive. It does not matter if you are going to travel or to make investments, you will need to deal with them.

There are about 180 currencies on the Earth, and only one of them is the most expensive currency. Many people may suggest that it is Dollar or Euro because they are extremely widespread. However, is it indeed so? If you want to know, just go on reading!

What is the highest currency of the top 10 most expensive ones? It is a generally known fact that the level of the economic development of a state affects its currency value. To compare their prices, it is necessary to take into account some stable admeasurement. So the list of the top world currencies is based on the price compared to the most traded currency – US Dollar.

10. Canadian Dollar (1 CAD = 0.75 USD)

Canadian Dollar banknotes are issued in 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 USD denominations. One can see Wilfrid Laurier (first French-Canadian Prime Minister), Queen Elizabeth II, William Lyon Mackenzie King (Prime Minister) and John A. MacDonald (first Prime Minister of the state) depicted on the money. Banknotes design is more colourful compared to USD ans. Moreover, even currency itself is older than US Dollars (CAD was issued in 1817). The currency is used exceptionally in Canada and somehow reminds Swiss Francs.

9. The United States Dollar

As it has been already mentioned, USD is the most popular currency in the world. It depicts George Washington, pyramid and eagle on the background. It was introduced in 1913, and its design remained unchanged since 1963. Countries, where Dollar circulates, are the United States of America, Ecuador, El Salvador, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, East Timor and Zimbabwe. But it’s not the strongest in the world.

8. Swiss Franc (1 CHF = 1.04 USD)

Original Swiss Franc is the national currency that circulates in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Shortened name is CHF, and it means Confoederatio Helvetica Franc. Helvetica is the second, elevated name of Switzerland. It is also called Stutz, Stei, Amiese, Frankler, Liber. There are following denominations of banknotes: 1000, 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10 Franc. Smaller money goes in coins. For the first time, Franc was printed in 1907, and up to the 1930s, the Swiss Franc corresponded to gold-silver standard (the standard that connects money supply to gold automatically).

7. Euro (1 EUR = 1.14 USD)

Euro circulates in the European Union, which includes a huge number of European countries such as Austria, Cyprus, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, France, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain and Slovenia. Due to the prevalence in the EU, Euro has become extremely popular all over the world. Banknotes are common for all Euro countries, but coins have different national symbols depicted on them. The denomination is as follows: 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, and 5 EUR.

6. Cayman Islands Dollar (1 KYD = 1.20 USD)

The currency circulates in the Cayman Islands since 1972. It replaced the Jamaican Dollar. Money of the state with the highest living standard in the Caribbean takes the sixth place in the rating. It has the denomination of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 Dollars. However, banknotes have nothing familiar with habitual green papers. Cayman Islands Dollars are multicolour and bright. They depict Queen Elizabeth II and such symbols as Scallop shell, land crabs, a map of the Cayman Islands and others.

5. British Pound (1 GBP = 1.26 USD)

One of the most expensive and popular world currencies is the British Pound (GBP). It is often used in international trade operations. It actively circulates in the UK and Northern Ireland. After World War II in 1945, the British pound lost its value. It happened because of the economic fall after the war. Later, Pound restored its positions on the world trade market. Today, it takes fifth place in the rating and is considered almost the best value currency. It is important to notice that it is an old currency. First black and white banknotes appeared between 1725 and 1745. They changed significantly ever since, and today they are multicoloured and portray the Queen on the United Kingdom.

4. Jordanian Dinar (1 JOD = 1.4(USD)

This currency is recognised by the abbreviation JOD. It started its circulation in Jordan in 1949 and subsequently replaced Palestinian pound. Dinar is divided into 100 piastres or 1000 fulus. Images of the royal family are portrayed there, and in the whole banknotes have a beautiful design. Thus their style can be considered outstanding. The banknote also has some inscriptions in Arabic and English. The country itself has limited natural resources and depends on international connections. However, the government does their best to maintain a stable level of life in the state, and they do it well because the fourth place in the rating definitely tells about prosperity.

3. Omani Rial (1 OMR = 2.60 USD)

This currency is ranked the third among the world top currencies. It circulates in Oman since 1977 and is divided into 1,000 Baisas. The economy of this rich country is based mostly on the oil industry, and the state earned a lot due to joining the World Trade Organization.

2. Bahraini Dinar (1 BHD = 2.65 USD)

This is currently number two world top currency. Today it circulates in Bahrain (the country east of Saudi Arabia and in the middle of the Arabian Gulf). Earlier, the Indian rupee was the national currency of the state, but in 1965, the banknote called Dinar was introduced. Its denominations are 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 500 and 500. Bahrain is a prosperous state. 60% of its export products is petroleum, and the level of unemployment there is only about 3.8%, and there is almost no agriculture activity.

1. Kuwaiti Dinar (1 KWD = 3.29 USD)

Kuwaiti Dinar is the strongest currency on the globe! This currency is abbreviated as KWD. Statistically, the population of Kuwait is about 4,230,832, and it is continuously growing. Due to economic stability and a good level of life, more and more people immigrate to this state. It is unbelievable, but the number of millionaires there is predicted to reach 39,000 by the end of 2019! This country is wealthy and prosperous, and it holds 8% of the world oil reserves. Besides, the currency was introduced in Kuwait only in 1961. It grew rapidly and kept on increasing every year. The country has peculiar rules of life that make it prosperous: There are no taxes in Kuwait, The state exports mainly petroleum and oil. The state trades with the richest world countries like Japan, South Korea, the USA, India, Singapore, the European Union, China, and Saudi Arabia.

Now you know that the highest currency in the world is the Kuwaiti Dinar. It may be surprising because it is much more expensive than habitual Dollar or Euro. In the whole, there is a tendency: the most costly currencies circulate in countries where oil is produced. So who knows, maybe these banknotes will replace Dollars in our wallets soon.

Top 10 Wealthiest Country in the World

The following are the world’s wealthiest countries by Gross Domestic Product (at Purchasing Power Parity) per capita. Using the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) value of all final goods shows the true value of a dollar within a country in a given year.

All figures in this article are taken from the latest 2017 numbers according to the International Monetary Fund.

10. United States – $64,770

While most nations on the list have (relatively) small populations, it is impressive that the world’s largest economy, the United States, can maintain a per capita GDP (PPP) of $64,770, considering its population of over 310 million people. Reasons behind its success include its large domestic automotive industry, a technological sector that fosters innovation, and a system of democracy that protects entrepreneurial and intellectual property rights.

9. Switzerland – $65,741

The GDP (PPP) per Swiss citizen is $65,741. Swiss banking and financial institutions keep this country and its economy afloat. It is important to note that some of the wealthiest people and companies in the world own Swiss bank accounts and therefore Switzerland has excess capital to use for investment purposes. Zurich and Geneva, Switzerland’s most well-known cities, have consistently ranked among the top ten worldwide in terms of standards of living.

8. Kuwait – $67,970

Kuwait hosts a small, relatively open economy and its citizens enjoy a per capita GDP (PPP) of $67,970. With nearly 10% of the world’s oil reserves, petroleum accounts for nearly half of GDP and 95% of export revenues and government income. In recent years, Kuwait has done little to diversify its economy due to a very positive fiscal situation.

7. The United Arab Emirates – $70,570

This Middle Eastern federation of Emirates has a land area of about 32,278 sq. miles, which means it could easily fit within New York State (54,556 sq. miles). With a population of 9.2 million people, it’s a bit more populated than the state of New Jersey. Roughly one-third of the $70,570 per capita economy comes from oil revenues, while the service sector and telecommunications also contribute significantly. The UAE is the second largest economy in the Arab world after Saudi Arabia.

The government is working on diversifying the economy to rely less on petroleum revenue.

3. Singapore – $103,720

8 Reasons Why You Should Work For Yourself

Subscribe To Our You Tube Channel

Have you ever imagined a life where you are free to live on your own terms? Free from boss? And free from certain kind of rules?

Where you call the shots and have the ability and opportunity to make as much money as you like?
You most probably have.

This is almost everyones dream, don’t get me wrong, working for yourself comes with it’s own set of problems, headaches, and set backs but there’s nothing quite like knowing that you are in control.

Here are 10 reasons why you should work for yourself:

1. You can work from anywhere

Tired of having to dress up every single day in formal office attire? I would say that one of the perks of being able to work for yourself is the ability to work from literally anywhere in the world. This is especially true for internet entrepreneurs.

2. You can do work you actually enjoy

Probably the main reason why most people decide to work for themselves. 90% of people dislike the work that they do at their jobs, which makes getting paid to do something you like a pretty sweet deal.

3. You have the opportunity to create jobs

Nothing feels better than being able to support and give others opportunities to shine. By working for yourself, and assuming you are successful, you will eventually hire others to take on the roles you don’t have time to do. You will be helping others to pay their bills, feed their families, and make a decent living.

4. There is no limit on how much money you can make

Really! When you work for a company, you are limited to a certain amount of money each month… a salary. And if you’rereally good, you’ll probably get a 10% or 20% increase. By working for yourself, the harder you work, the more money you will make for yourself. There’s no limit.

As fun as it might sound, working for yourself can be extremely stressful at times. No one will force you to come to work, you can work in your pyjamas, and can wake up at any time you please. This can be dangerous, and getting too comfortablemight not be a good thing. If you’re smart though, instead of crashing and burning, this will teach you self-discipline and maturity.

6. You can live out your true purpose in life

Ultimately, this is what we are all aiming for. For our lives to have a true purpose that is greater than ourselves. To know that we are creating meaningful work that is actually making a difference in this life. Working for yourself will allow you to live out your purpose.

7. You skills will grow at an astonishing rate

I have a friend who’s corporate job requires them to write 50 – 100 campaigns a day. This is cool and all, but it won’t really teach them any other valuable skills in the market place. Doing your own thing, at least at the start, would require you to get out there and wear 10 hats at a time. Product development, marketing, sales, accounting – these are all things you would have to learn and implement on your own.

8. It will give people a reason to remember you

And finally, my favorite one of all. Working for yourself will give you the adventure of a lifetime, a great story to tell, and most importantly – a reason for people to remember you. Nothing drives us more than the desire for a great legacy.Karim Boubker

Top 8 Sleep Myths That Can Harm Your Health
These common misconceptions about sleep can harm your health by keeping you from getting quality zzzz.

The most common myths we believe about sleep are wrong and unhealthy.

Humans spend roughly one-third of their lives sleeping. Despite this, sleep still remains something of a mystery.

However, we do know that sleep is deeply connected to our well-being, mood, and health.

A night of bad sleep means more than just being grumpy in the morning. In the short term it can mean poor performance at work or school. But chronic sleep deprivation can lead to serious health problems including increasing a person’s risk of heart attack and early mortality.

Sleep scientists say that more needs to be done to educate the public about healthy sleep behaviors — and dispel rumors about unhealthy ones.

A new study published in the journal Sleep Health is doing just that by taking on pervasive sleep myths and debunking them.

In their study, researchers put together an exhaustive list of misconceptions of sleep and narrowed them down to 20.

The myths were ranked according to two different characteristics: how false they were and their potential impact on public health.

These are the top eight most harmful sleep myths from that list.

Myth #1: Many adults need only five hours or less of sleep for general health
Researchers rated this myth as having the most potential harm on public health by far.

Habitual sleep deprivation is associated with diverse and far reaching health effects and none of them are good.

Sleep deprivation will affect your heart (increasing risk of hypertension and heart attack) and your mind (decreasing cognitive functioning and increasing risk of depression). Risk of diabetes and obesity also increase.

For adults, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends between seven and nine hours of sleep per night, and there really isn’t a shortcut to get around it.

“There may be variability in how much sleep an individual needs… but I don’t know that in an individual you can change that very much. I think you can get used to less sleep, but you’re getting used to being miserable,” said Dr. Steven H. Feinsilver, director of the Center for Sleep Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. Feinsilver was not affiliated with the research.

Myth #2: Watching television is a good way to relax before bed

You’re probably already aware that this one is a no-no. And it goes for more than just television. Cellphones, tablets, and all kinds of personal electronics are not a good idea when you’re getting ready for bed.

Researchers have increasingly focused on “blue light” emitted by screens and its effect on sleep and negative sleep-related health outcomes.

Beds are for sleeping, [with] one exception. Watching television and the internet are not it,” said Feinsilver.

Myth #3: In terms of your health, it doesn’t matter what time of day you sleep
Our bodies tend to follow a natural rhythm of wakefulness and sleep that is attuned to sunrise and sunset for a reason.

However, due to our careers, families, and social lives, we don’t always do our sleeping during the night.

While some missed sleep here and there isn’t necessarily a big deal, shifting your sleep schedule long term isn’t healthy.

The study authors write that individuals who work night-shift jobs often experience circadian rhythm desynchronization and lower quality sleep. They also have higher risk for health outcomes including depression and diabetes.

Timing of sleep is important,” said the study’s author Rebecca Robbins, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at NYU School of Medicine in the Center for Healthful Behavior Change, “That’s why we see health risks cluster among individuals who work on shift schedules.”

Myth #4: Lying in bed with eyes closed is almost as good as sleeping
You may feel like you’re getting sufficient rest lying in bed, even if you can’t quite get to sleep, but researchers rated this myth as majorly false as well as potentially harmful.

Everything from your brain to your heart to your lungs function differently when sleeping compared to being awake. If you know you’re awake, the rest of your body does too.

“One is either sleeping or awake with little overlap,” write the authors. “Available evidence is showing that cognitive activity when a person is sleeping is distinctly different from wake with eyes closed.”

Myth #5: Being able to fall asleep anytime and anywhere is a sign of a healthy sleep system
A healthy sleeper actually takes a couple minutes to fall asleep. We do see that if people fall asleep right away… that can be a sign that they are not getting quite enough sleep,” said Robbins.

Yes, it may seem like a gift, but falling asleep instantly, whether on an airplane or in a boring meeting, could actually mean that you’re sleep deprived.

Feinsilver even calls this myth “dangerous, because it minimizes the idea of excessive daytime sleeping as being bad for you or being a sign of something that’s bad for you.”

Myth #6: Alcohol before bed will improve your sleep
A Pernod digestif after dinner. A nip of brandy before bed. Some of grandpa’s old cough medicine. Whatever your poison, it won’t help you sleep any better. In fact, it will likely make you feel worse the next day.

“Not only is that tremendously wrong, but it’s also pretty dangerous. It’s really terrible for sleep,” said Feinsilver.

He also notes that a nightcap can also cause sleep apnea or make it worse.

Myth #7: Your brain and body can learn to function just as well with less sleep
Between work, friends, and family, who has time for a full night’s sleep?

It’s just this common belief that if you try a little bit harder, you might be able to survive the consequences of insufficient sleep. You just adapt a little bit more or you have another cup of coffee and you’ll be able to get by and power through. We hear that all the time,” said Robbins.

However, it’s just not true. As much as we’d like to think we can train our bodies to need less sleep, the science says the opposite.

All of the evidence shows, without a shadow of a doubt, that chronic insufficient sleep, of five six hours or less, is associated with a host of unfavorable consequences,” she said.

Myth #8: Although annoying for bed partners, loud snoring is mostly harmless
Loud snoring is actually one of the most common symptoms of sleep apnea, a disorder in which an individual can actually stop breathing while asleep.

Chronic loud snoring can indicate that the airway is being blocked at night. But not all snoring is a sign of sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea affects quality of sleep. So if you snore loudly and you suffer from fatigue or sleepiness during the day, those symptoms together could mean you have it.

Individuals with other health conditions including being overweight or obese, having high blood pressure, or being a smoker increase the risk of sleep apnea.

In conclusion, In a new publication, researchers say that common misconceptions about sleep can lead to unhealthy sleep behaviors. To fight back against these sleep myths, they debunked 20 of the most common of these myths, including things like “watching television before bed is a good way to relax,” and “adults need five hours or less sleep for general health.”

Sleep quality is associated with both positive and negative health outcomes. Researchers hope that by debunking these myths, individuals will gain a better understanding about sleep and improve their own sleep behaviors, thereby also improving their health.

“We believe that these myths are one reason that the population hasn’t yet warmed to the idea of making sleep a priority,” saidRebecca Robbins, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at NYU School of Medicine in the Center for Healthful Behavior Change.

If we don’t do the intervention work or the public health campaign work to annihilate these myths or address them head on, debunk them, and help people realize and kind of motivate to put into practice the evidence based behaviors, we’re limiting our potential for good sleep and ultimately good health,” she said.
